About
Head of the River Campground sits at the base of a forested hillside where the Williamson River emerges from its spring-fed headwaters. This small, rustic campground in the Fremont-Winema National Forest offers five campsites along the pure, cold river. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, and a single vault toilet serves the campground. There is no potable water, so campers must pack in their own supply. The campground draws fly-fishers targeting the Williamson River's renowned trout population, and hunters favor the site during fall seasons. While there are no formal trails, visitors can walk down to the riverbank to explore. The small access roads and tight turnarounds make this campground unsuitable for RVs. Be prepared for heavy mosquito activity in June and July. The campground is free to use and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required.
Directions
From Chiloquin, OR take Sprague River Road east towards Sprague River for approximately 5 miles, then turn left onto Williamson River Road. Turn left onto Forest Service Road 4648, then left again onto FS Road 4648030. The campground is at the end of the road.
