About
Drake Peak Lookout sits at 8,222 feet on the crest of the North Warner Mountain Range, providing sweeping views across three states. Built in 1948 as a Forest Service fire detection station, it now serves as a unique overnight rental. The compact 14x14-foot cabin is furnished with fold-up cots, a small table and chair, propane wall lights, and a propane cook stove. A wood stove provides heat. Outside, a vault toilet and picnic table are available, with additional rocky space for tent camping. No potable water is available on-site; the nearest source is Mud Creek Campground, approximately six miles away. Guests must also supply their own firewood and all camping gear. The surrounding area supports deer, elk, pronghorn, and migratory waterfowl. Popular activities include hiking to Drake Peak summit, stargazing under exceptionally dark skies, and accessing the Fremont and Crane Mountain National Recreation Trails from nearby South Fork Crooked Creek Trailhead. Note that the final five miles of access road are rough with dips, bumps, and boulders, and may require a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle.
Directions
From Lakeview, Oregon, travel north on US 395 approximately 6 miles, then turn right onto Highway 140 east toward Adel. Continue about 8 miles, then turn left onto Forest Road 3615.
