About
Rainbow Bay Day Use Area sits on the banks of scenic Lake of the Woods in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, approximately 40 minutes northwest of Klamath Falls, Oregon. This popular day use facility is positioned adjacent to Lake of the Woods Resort on the northeast shore of the lake, offering visitors convenient access to water recreation and forest activities without overnight camping options. The site is equipped with two vault toilets, multiple picnic tables, campfire rings, BBQ pedestals, and ample parking including spaces for boat trailers. A boat ramp provides direct lake access, and the nearby Lake of the Woods Marina offers rentals for those without their own watercraft. Anglers fish from shoreline or boat for rainbow and brown trout, Kokanee salmon, bass, and perch. The generous beach area makes it popular for swimming, while the calm waters are suitable for kayaking, paddle boarding, and water skiing. Rainbow Bay's location near the Sky Lakes Wilderness provides access to hiking trails that lead into towering conifer forests. The wilderness area features over 200 lakes and ponds scattered across rocky ridges and timbered slopes, with elevations ranging from 3,800 to 9,495 feet at Mount McLoughlin. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, black bears, and various bird species inhabiting the diverse forest habitats. The site accommodates up to 100 people and can be reserved for $100 for group events including family reunions and weddings, or accessed for $10-15 per vehicle for day use.
