Overview

Adirondack Park is open year-round with no entrance gates or fees. At 6 million acres, it's the largest protected area in the contiguous U.S., combining public Forest Preserve and private lands. Current conditions (as of late October 2025) show average to below-average water levels, with temperatures in the mid-40s at base elevations and upper-20s at night. High-elevation summits are experiencing winter-like conditions with ice, frost, and snow accumulations - hikers should pack the 10 Winter Hiking Essentials and crampons. Post-peak foliage has left trails slippery with fallen leaves hiding rocks and roots. Important to note: Avalanche Pass trail remains closed due to a recent slide. Bear canisters are required in the Eastern High Peaks Wilderness from April 1-November 30 for overnight users. Sunset is currently before 6 PM (5:54 PM), so headlamps are essential. The Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) requires reservations from May 1-October 31 for parking and trailhead access. Parking fills early at popular trailheads - arrive early with backup plans. Trails can be rugged and conditions change rapidly; proper preparation and the hiking essentials are critical.
