About

Ausable Point Campground is a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation facility located on Lake Champlain near Peru, New York. The campground extends from Route 9 into the lake, providing 123 campsites with natural sand shoreline and gentle slopes. Built in 1965 and opened in 1966, the facility offers modern amenities including hot showers, flush toilets, and a trailer dump station. The campground accommodates RVs and trailers up to 35 feet in length across four loops, with both back-in and a group camping site available. Many sites offer views of Valcour Island to the north. Day use facilities include a large sand beach with bathhouse, picnic pavilion, basketball court, and a cartop boat launch. The location is designated as a windsurfing area at the Stone Jetty. Lake Champlain provides excellent fishing for northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, lake trout, brown trout, salmon, walleye, and panfish. The adjacent Wickham Marsh Wildlife Management Area offers hiking trails five miles south, while Valcour Island Bird Conservation Area lies 2.5 miles north by boat. The campground borders a wildlife management area with trail access for hikers and paddlers. Plattsburgh is 12 miles north, Lake Placid is 45 miles away, and Montreal is 70 miles north.

Directions

From I-87 (Northway) Exit 35, proceed east on Route 442 approximately 2.5 miles to Route 9. Turn left, proceed 0.5 mile, and the entrance will be on your right. From Plattsburgh, follow Route 9 south 12 miles.
