About

Alger Island Campground offers a true backcountry island camping experience on Fourth Lake in New York's Adirondack Park. Accessible only by boat, this secluded campground features 15 lean-to shelters and 2 tent sites spread across the wooded island. Each site includes a fireplace, hibachi grill, and picnic table. Pit privies serve the campground, and while water spigots are available, the water is non-potable so campers must bring their own drinking water. The island setting provides exceptional recreation opportunities including fishing for lake trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, and Atlantic salmon in the surrounding waters. A hiking trail circles the island for those wanting to explore on foot. Campers register at the Fourth Lake Day Use Area on Petrie Road before boating to the island. The day use area offers a boat launch for motorized vessels and a hand launch for paddlers. This is a carry-in, carry-out campground, so campers must pack out all trash. Firewood may be purchased on-site but must come from within a 50-mile radius due to invasive species regulations. Pets are permitted with proof of current rabies vaccination and must remain leashed at all times.

Directions

From Route 28 in Inlet, take South Shore Road to Petrie Road. Travel approximately 1 mile to the Fourth Lake Picnic Area registration point. Register at the day use area before boating to the island.
