Frontier Town Campground is a modern state facility developed on 91 acres along the Schroon River in North Hudson, Essex County. Built on the site of the beloved Frontier Town theme park that operated from 1952 to 1998, the campground opened in 2019 as part of New York's Gateway to the Adirondacks initiative at Exit 29 of the Northway (I-87). The campground features 77 sites divided into three distinct areas. The Blacksmith Equestrian Loop offers 19 sites with 50-amp electric hookups, horse corrals, stud and tie stalls, and a loading ramp. The Stagecoach RV/Trailer Loop provides 13 sites with electric hookups suited for hard-sided camping units. Prairie Junction accommodates tent campers and groups across 45 sites, including two with EV charging stations. All sites include a picnic table and fire ring. Facilities are well-appointed for a state campground, with multiple shower buildings offering hot water, flush toilets, water spigots throughout, and a trailer dump station. Five ADA-accessible campsites (21, 37, 54, 66, 80) are available along with accessible restrooms, shower buildings, and approximately two miles of accessible trails. The campground also features playgrounds, picnic pavilions with grills and electrical outlets, and sells firewood and ice on site.
