About

Lake Harris Campground is located on the northern shore of 275-acre Lake Harris, fed by the mighty Hudson River in its beginning stages and sheltered among large hardwood trees which offer splendid color contrasts throughout the year. The campground features 89 campsites, with 57 shoreline sites and 32 off-water sites, offering a good degree of privacy. Camping equipment from tents to 40-foot RVs can be accommodated. The campground offers a variety of recreational opportunities including canoeing and boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming. Motor boats are allowed, and a small informal boat launch is available in the campground, with a larger town-owned launch located across the lake. Rowboat and canoe rentals are available. Lake Harris offers fishing for walleye, northern pike, small and large mouth bass, bullhead, and yellow perch. Swimming is available from the designated beach area, though unsupervised by lifeguards. Nearby attractions include the Adirondack Park Visitors Interpretive Center at Newcomb, trails on the Santanoni Preserve Historic Site, Goodnow and Vanderwhacker Mountains with fire towers, and a major trailhead to the High Peaks Wilderness Area at Tahawus. The campground opened in 1962 and is operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
