Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 2:33AM EDT by NWS Burlington VT
* The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures. Lake and river temperatures are only in the upper 40s to mid 50s. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating today and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!
About
Saranac Lake Islands Campground offers a quintessential Adirondack island camping experience on Lower and Middle Saranac Lake. Accessible only by boat, the 87 primitive campsites are scattered across multiple islands, providing exceptional privacy and direct waterfront access. Five sites include lean-to structures. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, though campers must bring their own potable water and pack out all trash. The campground serves as a gateway to miles of interconnected waterways. Paddlers and motorboaters can access four additional lakes through a historic lock system, making this an ideal base for multi-day water exploration. Fishing opportunities include bass, pike, and perch. Due to limited parking at the boat launch, campers may need to use municipal lots in Saranac Lake Village. Quiet hours run from 10 PM to 7 AM and are strictly enforced. Generators are limited to 5 hours daily during designated times. Fires are permitted using dead and downed wood only; chainsaws are prohibited. Pets are welcome with current rabies vaccination and must be leashed at all times.
Directions
The campground office is located at 4468 State Route 3, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. Campsite access is by boat only from the boat launch. Due to limited parking at the launch, campers may need to use municipal lots in Saranac Lake Village.
