Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:35PM EDT by NWS Burlington VT
...Please check with state and local authorities regarding guidelines for allowed activities... * The warm air temperatures today in the upper 60s to lower 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the 40s and 50s across Lake Champlain and in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the US Coast Guard, when the water temperatures are below 50 degrees, the chance of immediate incapacitation due to cold shock is extremely high. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!
About
Putnam Pond Campground occupies a prime location on Putnam Pond in the East-Central Adirondacks, serving as the primary staging area for backcountry trips into the 46,000-acre Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. The 72-site campground divides between 61 developed lakeside sites in the main loop and 9 remote primitive sites accessible only by boat or foot trail. The developed area features hot showers, flush toilets, a trailer dump station, and a recycling center. Canoes, rowboats, and kayaks are available for rent, and a boat launch provides easy pond access. Firewood and ice are sold on-site. Sites accommodate camping equipment from tents up to 30-foot RVs. The remote sites (R1-R9) offer a more primitive experience with only outhouses and non-potable water, reached by paddling across the pond. Whether day-fishing by the dam or staging multi-day wilderness expeditions, the campground balances accessibility with Adirondack backcountry character.
