Overview

Siuslaw National Forest is fully open and operational with no major closures affecting general access. The forest encompasses over 630,000 acres along Oregon's central coast from Tillamook to Coos Bay, making it one of only two national forests in the lower 48 with oceanfront property. Current fire danger is at Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) I (Low), with no active fire restrictions or large fires. Key alerts for visitors: Cape Perpetua Visitor Center is closed through mid-May 2026 for remodeling (though trails and area remain accessible); Homestead Trailhead to Sweet Creek Trail is closed due to boardwalk damage (Sweet Creek Falls Trailhead access remains open); FSR 1861 has ongoing closure from 2021 landslide; Sand Lake Recreation Area requires tickets/reservations for July 4th weekend. The forest offers diverse ecosystems from old-growth forests and waterfalls to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and coastal headlands at Cape Perpetua and Cascade Head. Winter conditions: forest roads are not maintained for snow/ice and are prone to flooding. Western snowy plover nesting season restrictions apply March-September at certain beaches.
