About

West Winds Campground is an 18-site campground located in the Sand Lake Recreation Area within Siuslaw National Forest, designed specifically for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts. The campground sits adjacent to a large sand dune area and offers direct access to both dune riding areas and the beach. All campsites feature paved parking aprons, and some sites include fire rings; sites without fire rings require raised fire pits. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. The Sand Lake Recreation Area is a popular destination for OHV riders, offering extensive dune riding opportunities and beach access. Campground amenities include potable water, flush toilets, and picnic tables at each site. Payment is by credit or debit card only at the fee kiosk located at the West Winds Day Use Area. The facility experiences heavy use, particularly on weekends from May through September. OHV regulations are strictly enforced: riders must have a State of Oregon OHV permit, no riding is allowed from midnight to 6 a.m., and alcohol is banned in OHV riding areas. Campers in dispersed areas must have a portable toilet. Dogs must be on leashes no longer than 6 feet within the developed campground. The campground fills quickly during summer weekends, so early arrival is recommended.
