About
Tahkenitch Campground is situated in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, 8 miles north of Reedsport on Highway 101. The campground features 23 campsites, with many heavily wooded and secluded sites separated by thick understory of coastal shrubbery, while others are more open. Paved parking aprons accommodate various camping setups, though no RV hookups are available. The adjacent day use area serves as the trailhead for three popular trails: Tahkenitch Dunes Trail, Threemile Lake Trail, and Threemile Lake South Trail. The Tahkenitch Dunes Trail travels through a mile of conifer forest before opening onto expansive sand dunes with ocean views, passing through shore pine stands before reaching the Pacific Coast. These trails offer excellent opportunities for sand play, scenery, and wildlife viewing. Across Highway 101 lies Tahkenitch Lake, whose name means "lake of many fingers." Spanning 2,118 acres, the lake provides relaxing fishing opportunities for cutthroat and steelhead trout, largemouth bass, and yellow perch. The campground's location within reach of coastal forests, expansive dunes, and the Pacific Ocean makes it an ideal base for exploring the diverse Oregon Dunes ecosystem. Douglas fir and wild berries are abundant throughout the area, and visitors may spot Roosevelt elk, pelicans, sea lions, and bald eagles. The campground is also a few miles from off-road vehicle trails on the dunes.
