About
South Jetty Sand Camping is a unique dispersed camping area located within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, offering primitive camping directly on the sand among the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America. Campsites are positioned on the sand and dispersed along the coast and Siltcoos River, with the nearby dunefield featuring wind-sculpted formations towering up to 500 feet above sea level. Access to campsites requires a 4x4 vehicle capable of navigating soft sand. Standard sites accommodate up to 20 people and five vehicles, while two group sites can handle up to 40 people and 10 vehicles. The Goosepasture OHV Staging Area serves as the access point for sand camping sites 1 through 14. This is a pack-in, pack-out facility with no developed amenities, so campers must bring their own water, portable toilets, fire pans, and garbage bags. Off-road vehicle riding is the primary attraction, with designated routes and miles of open riding areas throughout the dunes. An OHV curfew is enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and a State of Oregon OHV permit is required. From the nearby South Jetty Day-Use Area, visitors can access miles of non-motorized beach for hiking, beachcombing, and wildlife viewing. Seabirds are common, and whales can be spotted during migration seasons. The town of Florence, just north of the campground, provides restaurants, shops, and full services.
Directions
From Florence, Oregon, travel south on Highway 101 for 1 mile to South Jetty Road. Turn west and proceed 0.5 miles to the Goosepasture OHV Staging Area.
