About

Big Elk Campground is a small, primitive campground nestled in the Siuslaw National Forest near the confluence of Big Elk Creek. The campground features ten standard campsites and one dedicated hiker/biker site, all available on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. The site is popular with anglers targeting native fish in Big Elk Creek and hikers exploring the surrounding Coast Range forest. Amenities are basic: pit toilets and picnic tables are provided, and potable water is available seasonally but may be turned off during winter months. Uniquely, this campground is operated by the Harlan Community Development Corporation under a special use permit from the Forest Service, rather than by a federal concessionaire. This local stewardship reflects the community's connection to the land. Campers should be prepared to pack out all trash as no garbage service is provided.
