About

Wild Mare Horse Camp is a specialized equestrian campground located in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area along Oregon's central coast. Tucked among shore pine, Douglas fir, and huckleberry, the 12-site campground sits 22 miles south of Reedsport and 2 miles north of North Bend. The facility is specifically designed for horse campers, with 12 corrals provided for equestrian visitors. Each site is limited to two vehicles. Horse campers come here to explore the Wild Mare Horse Trail #4500, which begins at the adjacent Wild Mare Day Use area under a canopy of alder and spruce before emerging into open sand dunes and continuing to the beach. The dunes south of Horsfall Beach Road are designated for hiking and horseback riding only, while off-road vehicle enthusiasts can use the dunes north of the campground. The Pacific Ocean is less than a half mile from camp. The campground is named after a legendary filly that escaped from the Peterson family in 1955 and lived wild in the dunes for 32 years, becoming a local legend celebrated in prose, poetry, and song. The facility provides drinking water via hand pump, vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, trash bins, and recycling. Showers are available at nearby Horsfall Campground. Weed-free feed is required for all horses. The campground is heavily used during its operating season.

Directions

From North Bend, Oregon, follow Highway 101 north for about 2 miles to the Horsfall Dunes and Beach road sign. Turn left onto Trans Pacific Lane and proceed for 1.1 miles to the intersection with Horsfall Beach Road. Turn right onto Horsfall Beach Road and proceed for 1.9 miles. The campground entrance will be on the left.
