About
Spinreel Sand Camping offers a unique dispersed camping experience in the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, the largest off-road vehicle riding zone on the Oregon coast. Sand campsites are located directly on the open dunes and surrounded by coastal forest, with the Pacific Ocean nearby. Access is exclusively by 4x4 vehicles via soft sand routes, making this a true adventure for experienced off-roaders. Individual sites are identified by numbered posts (sites 58-73), with each site accommodating up to five vehicles and 20 campers. Sites 61-73 are remote locations with more difficult access. Campers must stay within 150 feet of their site post. This is a primitive, pack-it-in, pack-it-out facility with no provided amenities, so visitors must bring all necessary equipment including drinking water, portable toilets, fire pans, and garbage bags. OHV enthusiasts can choose between riding on designated routes such as the Coast Guard Trail and ATV Trail 430, or exploring the vast open riding zones. The area provides access to beaches for beachcombing and wildlife viewing, though a section north of the Spinreel Staging Area is reserved for horseback riders and hikers only. Nearby attractions include Eel Lake, Tenmile Lake, Tenmile Creek, and the non-motorized John Dellenback Dunes Trail located two miles north.
Directions
From Reedsport, Oregon, travel about 11 miles south on Highway 101 to Spinreel Road. Turn right onto Spinreel Road and proceed 1/2 mile. Access to sand campsites is via the Spinreel OHV Staging Area by 4x4 vehicles only on soft sand routes.
