Northern Highland American Legion State Forest

Overview

Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest is Wisconsin's largest state forest, spanning over 236,000 acres across Vilas, Oneida, and Iron counties near Woodruff, Minocqua, and Boulder Junction. Established in 1925 to protect the headwaters of the Wisconsin, Flambeau, and Manitowish Rivers, the forest is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025. The property is fully open year-round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and requires a vehicle admission sticker. With more than 900 lakes within its boundaries, the forest offers extensive recreation including 18 family campgrounds (modern, rustic, and primitive options), 105 designated boat-in campsites, and diverse activities like hunting, fishing, paddling, hiking, and ATV/UTV access on limited designated routes. The forest supports 244 bird species and is one of the world's largest bald eagle nesting sites. Two main visitor contact stations operate at Clear Lake and Crystal Lake areas. Recent planning includes approved variances for additional ATV/UTV routes and proposed bicycle touring trails. A centennial celebration event is scheduled for June 7, 2025, at Crystal Lake Campground.
