Bittersweet Wild Lakes Campgrounds
Open for the 2026 season. Operating dates are April 30 through November 1. Reservations required via wisconsin.goingtocamp.com.
About
Nestled in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest northeast of Minocqua, the Bittersweet Wild Lakes Area provides one of Wisconsin's most remote camping experiences. The five designated primitive campsites are spread across four wilderness lakes: Sunken Rowboat on Prong Lake, Loon Song on Smith Lake, Sunset Point on Oberlin Lake, and Big Rock and Trapper's Cabin on Bittersweet Lake. Access is exclusively by paddle; no motors of any kind are permitted on these lakes. The road to the boat launch parking lot is rough, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. Each campsite accommodates up to six people and includes a tent clearing, picnic table, and fire ring, with an open-air pit toilet located nearby. There is no potable water, so campers must pack in all drinking water. Reservations are required during the main season (late April through early November) and can be made through wisconsin.goingtocamp.com up to 11 months in advance. Maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights.
Directions
Located northeast of Minocqua, north of Highway 70, east of Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin. The road to the boat launch parking lot is rough; a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended.
