About
Indian Mounds Campground is a rustic family campground located in the southern portion of the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest on the northeast corner of Lake Tomahawk. With 39 reservable campsites numbered 1-39, this traditional campground provides a quieter camping experience with wider spacing than modern facilities. Lake Tomahawk is part of the Minocqua Chain of Lakes and offers excellent fishing and boating opportunities. The campground features minimal facilities typical of rustic camping, including three vault toilet buildings (three of the four vault toilet buildings are ADA-accessible), three hand pumps for drinking water, and separate trash and recycling dumpsters. Direct water access is available within the campground, and an adjacent boat launch with its own vault toilet building provides convenient lake access. Sites 9-10 and 17-18 are double campsites that can accommodate up to 12 people and two-wheeled camping units. Sites 24-27 and 29-31 are walk-to, tent-only sites where campers must walk a short distance from their vehicles to the campsite. All campsites require advance reservations, which can be made online or by phone from the same day of arrival up to 11 months in advance. The campground operates seasonally and provides a classic northwoods camping experience in one of Wisconsin's premier state forests.
