July 17th, 12:08 PM — July 20th, 12:30 PM

Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Pollution Advisory...in effect until noon PDT Monday. Wildfires burning in the region combined with forecast conditions will cause air quality levels to fluctuate and could be at unhealthy levels. Smoke levels can change rapidly depending on the weather. People at risk include infants and young children, people with heart or lung disease, older adults and pregnant people. People can take the following precautions to protect their health: * Follow local burn restrictions to prevent deteriorating air quality. * Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during periods of poor air quality. * People with heart or lung problems and young children are especially vulnerable. These people should stay indoors while smoke levels are high. * Use certified High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters in indoor heating, ventilation, cooling and air purification systems. * Avoid using wood-burning stoves and other sources of indoor smoke if possible. Overview

Willamette National Forest is a 1,675,407-acre forest stretching 110 miles along the western slopes of the Cascade Range in western Oregon. The forest is currently open with an Industrial Fire Precaution Level at Level I (Low). Recent winter storms have impacted recreation sites and roads, with continued rainfall and high winds creating additional impacts—crews are working to clear roads and restore access. Current emergency closures include Forest Service Roads 2223 and 2212, and a portion of FSR 1003 (Tom Creek Road) is closed for the first 4.1 miles from its junction with FSR 10. Active wildfire closures remain in place from previous fire seasons. The forest features eight wilderness areas, extensive hiking opportunities, waterfalls, and two main winter recreation areas at Santiam Pass and Willamette Pass. Sno-Park permits are required November 1 through April 30 for designated parking areas. Forest Service roads are not maintained for snow and ice, so be prepared for winter driving conditions with potential snow, trees, or debris blocking access. Central Cascades Wilderness permits are required for some areas. Christmas tree permits are available for the holiday season. Contact specific ranger districts (Detroit, Sweet Home, McKenzie River, Middle Fork) for current trail and road conditions before heading out.
