About
The Fish Lake Remount Depot Cabins sit at an elevation of 3,200 feet in the Willamette National Forest near the Santiam Pass Winter Recreation Area. These rustic wood structures were built in 1924 and originally served as a rest and resupply station for Forest Service horse packers heading in and out of Wilderness areas. The compound includes a dispatcher's cabin, springhouse shed, garage/woodshed, and fire hose shelter, with two cabins available for public rental. The Hall House is a 3-room cabin with one bedroom, a common room with hideaway bed, and a kitchen, accommodating up to 4 guests at $95/night. The Commissary Cabin features a bedroom and kitchen at $85/night. Both cabins include full-size beds with mattresses, propane heating and cooking stoves, solar-powered lighting, and basic cookware. Neither cabin has water or electricity; guests must bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and washing. A pit toilet outhouse is located nearby. Access requires parking at Lava Lake Sno-Park (Oregon Sno-Park permit required November 1-April 30) and traveling approximately one mile by foot, cross-country skis, or snowshoes following blue diamond trail markers. The cabins overlook Fish Lake and its forested shoreline, with seven Sno-Parks within a 15-minute drive offering motorized and non-motorized winter recreation opportunities.
