About
Longbow Organization Camp is a unique historic group facility built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, spanning 10 acres on a picturesque bend of the South Santiam River. The campground features six alpine shelters with fireplaces facing the river, accommodating up to 48 people total. A covered dining hall with cooking area and fireplace seats 40 people, and an amphitheater provides seating for 75. This facility is designed exclusively for group use, with no tents or trailers allowed. The South Santiam River, fed by Cascade Mountain runoff, offers excellent fishing and wading opportunities. Visitors can explore the historic Old Santiam Wagon Road, a trail once used to transport livestock east across the Cascade Mountains to central Oregon's grasslands. The nearby Menagerie Wilderness provides additional hiking opportunities, and elk can sometimes be spotted in a pasture one mile from camp in early May. The campground includes a volleyball court and has parking limited to 12 vehicles maximum. Amenities include one accessible double vault toilet and a hand pump well providing potable water. Firewood is available for purchase onsite. Maximum capacity is 50 people and 12 vehicles. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance through Recreation.gov. Check-in is 2:00 p.m., checkout is 1:00 p.m., with a 14-day stay limit in any 60-day period.
