Overview

Daniel Boone National Forest encompasses over 708,000 acres across 21 counties in eastern Kentucky, offering 600+ miles of trails, two federal wilderness areas, and more than 250 recreation sites. The forest is currently open with several important alerts for visitors. There is an active area closure due to tornado damage in Pulaski and Laurel Counties (since May 25, 2025)—all roads, trails, and National Forest lands in these counties are closed to public use. Seasonal winter road closures are in effect for Red River Gorge Geological Area and Indian Creek roads through January 19, 2026. Trail impacts from recent severe weather are widespread; expect blowdown across the forest. Specific trail closures include portions of Cliffside Trail, Dog Slaughter Falls Trail, and multiple Sheltowee Trace suspension bridges damaged by storms. The Red River Gorge suspension bridge near KY 715 remains unusable due to a fallen tree. No visitor services are available at the Winchester Supervisor's Office, and the London Office only accepts cash/check payments due to network issues. Firewood permits are now available for online purchase. The forest has extensive regulations protecting sensitive areas, including climbing restrictions at popular sites like Sky Bridge, Gray's Arch, and Natural Arch Scenic Area.
