About
Tusayan-Montane Campground, formerly known as Ten-X Campground, sits in a pleasant ponderosa pine and Gambel oak forest on the Coconino Plateau at 6,600 feet elevation, just 2 miles south of Tusayan and 4 miles from the South Rim entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. This makes it an ideal base camp for visitors seeking a quieter camping experience while exploring one of the world's most iconic natural wonders. The campground offers 142 single campsites spread across 5 loops (Elk, Black Bear, Pronghorn, Raven, and Squirrel), each accommodating up to 8 people, plus 18 double sites for up to 14 people. About 30 sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, while the rest are reservable through Recreation.gov. Additionally, two group sites can accommodate 50 to 75 people each, making it suitable for larger gatherings. Sites include picnic tables, fire pits with grills, and access to vault toilets. Many sites can accommodate RVs up to 35 feet, with some pull-through options available. A short nature trail winds through the campground, offering opportunities to observe local wildlife and flora beneath towering ponderosa pines. Summer temperatures range from 50°F at night to 80-90°F during the day, with monsoon thunderstorms common in July and August. Snow is typical from December through March. The adjacent town of Tusayan provides restaurants, groceries, fuel, and tour services including helicopter rides and horseback riding. Commercial tour groups are not permitted at this campground due to high public demand and Forest Service policy.
