About

Mather Campground sits at approximately 7,000 feet elevation on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, named for Stephen Mather, the first director of the National Park Service. With 327 campsites spread across multiple loops, it is the largest and only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Most sites rest beneath a tall canopy of ponderosa pine, pinyon, and juniper trees, providing ample shade. Each site includes a fire ring with cooking grate, picnic table, and parking for up to two standard-sized vehicles. The campground serves as an ideal base for exploring one of Earth's most inspiring landscapes. From here, campers can access the Greenway, a paved walking and biking trail leading to scenic overlooks and the Visitor Center. The famous Rim Trail runs for 14 miles along the canyon edge and is just one mile from the campground. Bright Angel and South Kaibab trailheads, which descend into the canyon, are a short shuttle bus ride away. The park's free shuttle system connects the campground to numerous visitor centers, restaurants, museums, shops, and trailheads throughout the village. The campground accommodates both tent campers and RVs up to 30 feet in length. No electric, water, or sewer hookups are provided, though a free dump station and water fill station are available nearby at Camper Services. Flush toilets are located throughout the facility. Wildlife is abundant, including elk, mule deer, coyotes, songbirds, and the endangered California condor. The Colorado River flows 277 miles through the canyon bottom, visible from overlooks above. Summer temperatures typically reach the 80s with afternoon thunderstorms common in July through early September. Fall and spring are cool and sunny with occasional snow, while winter brings variable conditions requiring preparation.
