About
The Windwhistle Group Site is a walk-in group campground managed by the BLM Moab Field Office, located 38 miles southwest of Moab in the Canyon Rims Recreation Area. This isolated group site is tucked against the smooth sandstone cliffs of Roan Bailey Mesa, offering a peaceful hideaway surrounded by dramatic red rock scenery. At approximately 6,000 feet elevation, the campground provides a cooler alternative to the lower desert areas during summer months. The group site is located at the lower end of the larger Windwhistle Campground and requires a short walk-in from the parking area. Parking is limited and not suitable for large vehicles, RVs, motorhomes, or trailers. The site accommodates up to 25 people and includes a fire ring with grate, picnic tables, and access to a vault toilet. Water is typically available seasonally from May through September. Situated on the road to Needles Overlook, the campground provides excellent access to hiking, off-highway vehicle trails, and mountain biking in the surrounding Canyon Rims Recreation Area. The Needles District of Canyonlands National Park is nearby, offering numerous hiking and 4WD trails. Other nearby attractions include Hatch Point, Indian Creek climbing area, Wilson Arch, Ken's Lake, and the La Sal Mountain Loop road. The towns of Moab and Monticello are approximately 45 minutes away.
Directions
From Moab, drive 32 miles south on Highway 191 to the junction with the Needles Overlook road. Turn right and travel 6 miles on this road. The campground is on the left side of the road.
