Timpooneke

Closed — Closed for the season. The campground closed October 13, 2025 and typically reopens in late spring or early summer depending on snow conditions. The Alpine Loop Road (Highway 92) is closed in winter and inaccessible until spring.

About

Timpooneke Campground is situated along the spectacular 20-mile Alpine Loop Scenic Byway in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, positioned at the edge of the Mount Timpanogos Wilderness Area at 7,400 feet elevation. The campground features 20 single sites, 7 double sites, and 1 group site accommodating up to 40 people, all set among shady stands of aspen, fir, and spruce trees with a stream and riparian area running through the property. Wildlife sightings and summer wildflowers are abundant, and the autumn aspen display is particularly spectacular. The campground is the starting point for the renowned 15-mile round-trip Timpooneke Trail, which climbs to the summit of Mount Timpanogos and allows both hikers and horseback riders. Loop A is designated for equestrian camping, with each site featuring small horse corrals and water troughs. The rough dirt Timpooneke Road also begins at the campground, nearly circumnavigating Mount Timpanogos and providing excellent mountain biking and birding opportunities, though bicycles are not permitted within the adjacent wilderness area. Nearby attractions include Timpanogos Cave National Monument down American Fork Canyon, Cascade Springs just 9 miles away with accessible boardwalks, and Tibble Fork and Silver Flat Reservoirs offering non-motorized watercraft activities and fishing for rainbow, brook, and brown trout. The campground's location on the Alpine Loop provides stunning views of alpine canyons, mountain meadows, and the Wasatch Range. Note that Highway 92 has a 30-foot vehicle length restriction over the Alpine Loop.
