Closed — Closed for the season. The Alpine Loop closes in late October and typically reopens in late May, depending on snow conditions. Reservations must be made at least 5 days in advance through Recreation.gov.

About

Altamont Group Campground is located along the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway high in the Wasatch Mountains, directly adjacent to the Mount Timpanogos Wilderness Area. At an elevation of 7,400 feet, the campground is nestled among dense, shady stands of aspen, fir, and spruce trees where wildlife and summer wildflowers are abundant. The campground features a single group site accommodating up to 100 people with a large covered picnic shelter containing multiple picnic tables and a campfire circle. The site includes paved access from the Alpine Loop and a large paved parking area. The Timpooneke Trail begins across the road, offering a challenging 15-mile round-trip hike to the summit of Mount Timpanogos, while the rough Timpooneke Road provides excellent mountain biking and birding opportunities that nearly circumnavigate the mountain. The 20-mile Alpine Loop Scenic Byway passes through alpine canyons, mountain meadows, and pine forests with breathtaking views of the Wasatch Range. Nearby attractions include Timpanogos Cave National Monument, Cascade Springs with accessible boardwalks, and Tibble Fork and Silver Flat Reservoirs for non-motorized watercraft and fishing. Highway 92 has a 30-foot vehicle length restriction, limiting access for larger RVs and trailers.

Directions

From Salt Lake City, travel south on I-15 to Alpine-Highland exit 284. Travel east on Highway 92 approximately 13 miles through American Fork Canyon, then 3 miles south on the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. Campground is on the left.
