Closed — Closed for the winter season. The Alpine Loop (Highway 92) closes annually in late October and typically reopens in late May or early June depending on snow conditions. The campground operates seasonally when the Alpine Loop is open.

About

Theater in the Pines is a large group campground located along Highway 92, the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Situated at 7,600 feet elevation among pine, fir, and aspen trees, the campground is adjacent to the Mount Timpanogos Wilderness Area and features a historic stone amphitheater constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1934-36. The campground serves as a gateway to exceptional hiking opportunities. The Aspen Grove Trail begins next to the campground and climbs 14 miles round-trip to the 11,700-foot summit of Mount Timpanogos, one of the most prominent peaks in the Wasatch Range. The Stewart Falls Trail, a 4-mile round-trip hike, begins in the adjacent parking lot and leads to scenic waterfalls. The location provides abundant wildlife viewing opportunities and spectacular fall color displays when the aspen groves change. The site includes grills, picnic tables, and a large grassy area suitable for group gatherings and activities. Guests must check in with the host at Mount Timpanogos Campground to gain access. The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway passes through alpine canyons, mountain meadows, and forests with breathtaking views of the Wasatch Range. Nearby attractions include Sundance Resort, Cascade Springs, Deer Creek Reservoir, Tibble Fork Reservoir, and Timpanogos Cave National Monument.

Directions

From I-15, take exit 272 for 800 North toward Orem and proceed east on Highway 52 to the mouth of Provo Canyon. Go east on Highway 189 for 7 miles to Sundance Resort turnoff, Highway 92. Take Highway 92 for 6 miles past Sundance Resort and Aspen Grove Recreation Area. Campground will be on your left. Check in with host at Mount Timpanogos Campground to gain access.
