About
Altamont Group Campground is located high in the Wasatch Mountains along the 20-mile Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. At 7,400 feet elevation, the campground lies among dense stands of aspen, fir, and spruce trees adjacent to the Mount Timpanogos Wilderness Area. Wildlife and summer wildflowers are abundant, and autumn brings spectacular fall colors. The campground offers a single group site that accommodates up to 100 people. Facilities include a large picnic shelter with multiple tables, a campfire circle, accessible flush toilets, potable water, and a paved parking area. Due to the narrow Highway 92 access, vehicles and trailers over 30 feet are not recommended. Popular nearby activities include hiking the 15-mile round-trip Timpooneke Trail to the Mount Timpanogos summit, visiting Timpanogos Cave National Monument, exploring the accessible boardwalks at Cascade Springs, and fishing at Tibble Fork and Silver Flat Reservoirs.
Directions
From Salt Lake City, travel south on I-15 to Alpine-Highland exit 284. Travel east on Highway 92 approximately 13 miles through American Fork Canyon, then 3 miles south on the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. Campground is on the left.
