CASCADE SCENIC DRIVE DISPERSED AREA
Access depends on seasonal road conditions. The Cascade Springs road gate closes December 15 and remains closed through winter. Roads typically open in spring once snow melts, though exact timing varies by year. High-clearance or 4WD vehicle recommended. No fire restrictions currently in effect; campfires allowed in cleared areas away from vegetation. 14-day stay limit in any 30-day period.
About
Cascade Scenic Drive Dispersed Area encompasses primitive camping sites along the Cascade Springs Scenic Drive (FR-114) in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The road branches off from SR-92 near Sundance and winds through alpine terrain toward Cascade Springs and eventually connects to Wasatch Mountain State Park near Midway. Dispersed sites are positioned along the rougher sections of the road, offering solitude and panoramic mountain views. This is true dispersed camping with no developed facilities. There is no potable water, no toilets, and campers must pack out all trash. The road conditions can be challenging, with reports of washouts and deep ruts requiring high-clearance or 4WD vehicles, especially as you climb to higher sites. Snow and mud can affect access into late spring. The nearby Cascade Springs day-use area features boardwalk trails around natural artesian springs but prohibits camping. Campers using the dispersed area have convenient access to hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the Pleasant Grove and Heber-Kamas Ranger Districts.
Directions
From Provo or Orem, take US-189 up Provo Canyon and turn left onto SR-92 toward Sundance. About 3 miles past the BYU camp, turn right onto Cascade Springs Scenic Drive (FR-114). Dispersed sites are scattered along this road as you ascend toward Cascade Springs. The road is paved initially but becomes dirt/gravel with rough conditions at higher elevations.
