About

Savenac Bunkhouse is one of three rental facilities at the Historic Savenac Tree Nursery in the Lolo National Forest of western Montana. This unique lodging option provides sleeping accommodations for up to 30 people in a converted two-story garage building that was once part of the U.S. Forest Service's largest and most beautiful tree nurseries in the West. The nursery operated from 1907 until 1969, and today the site is preserved for public recreation and historical interpretation. The bunkhouse offers four bedrooms with doors on the first floor, each containing two twin beds and a dresser, plus additional twin beds and bunkbeds in a large open area. The entire second floor is an open space with multiple twin beds and bunkbeds spanning the building. Two bathrooms provide flush toilets, sinks, and showers with running water. The facility is for sleeping only, with no kitchen or refrigeration available. Guests must bring their own bedding, towels, soap, and other necessities. The location provides access to diverse recreational opportunities year-round. The world-class Route of the Hiawatha Trail for mountain biking is just 7 miles west. Savenac Creek runs through the compound, and the St. Regis River and numerous mountain streams offer fishing, wading, and non-motorized boating nearby. Self-guided historic tours, interpretive trails, and memorials dot the nursery grounds. Winter brings groomed snowmobile trails, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing opportunities, with Lookout Pass ski area 10 miles west on Interstate 90. The facility is located close to the Idaho border in the Bitterroot Mountains, home to abundant wildlife including deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and black bears.
