About

The Savenac Bunkhouse provides group sleeping accommodations at the Historic Savenac Tree Nursery in western Montana's Lolo National Forest. Originally a garage, the two-story building has been converted to house up to 30 guests. The first floor features four private bedrooms with twin beds and dressers, plus a large open area with additional twin beds and bunkbeds. The upper floor contains an open dormitory space spanning the entire building. Two bathrooms provide flush toilets, sinks, and showers with running water. This is a sleeping facility only with no cooking or dining amenities. Guests must bring their own bedding, towels, and toiletries. Pets must remain leashed within the compound and are not permitted inside the building. The nursery was founded in 1907 and operated until 1969. A visitor center operates Memorial Day through Labor Day, and interpretive trails and historic memorials are located throughout the compound. Beautiful Savenac Creek runs through the property. The facility sits near Haugan with easy access to Interstate 90, within walking distance of a restaurant, gas station, and general store. The world-class Route of the Hiawatha mountain biking trail is 7 miles west, and Lookout Pass ski area is 10 miles away. Numerous streams and the St. Regis River provide fishing and paddling opportunities nearby.

Directions

From Missoula, travel west on Interstate 90 for 90 miles to Exit 16 for Haugan. Turn right at the stop sign. At the frontage road turn right and take the first left across the cattleguard. Signs are present onsite.
