The Savenac Historic Tree Nursery will be closed for construction from 05/16/2026 through 06/15/2026. The facility will be under major renovation using Great American Outdoor Act funds. The Visitor Center and Self-Guided Tours will also be closed during this time.
About
Savenac East Cottage provides well-equipped accommodations at the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery in the Lolo National Forest of western Montana. This historic site was once the U.S. Forest Service's largest and most beautiful nursery in the West, operating from 1907 until 1969. The cottage features two bedrooms with one queen bed and two twin beds, a modern bathroom, full kitchen with stove, microwave, refrigerator, and cooking utensils, plus a dining area and living room. The facility accommodates up to four people and is a locked facility with key code access provided upon reservation. The nursery compound offers a rich historical experience with interpretive trails, memorials, and self-guided tours exploring the site's Forest Service heritage. Beautiful Savenac Creek runs through the compound, and the area provides access to diverse recreational opportunities. The world-class Route of the Hiawatha Trail for mountain biking is just 14 miles west, while numerous mountain streams and the St. Regis River offer fishing and non-motorized boating nearby. Winter visitors enjoy groomed snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and downhill skiing at Lookout Pass ski hill 16 miles west. The cottage is conveniently located off Interstate 90 near Haugan, within walking distance of a restaurant, gas station, and general store. A visitor center operates on the compound from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Directions
Traveling on Interstate 90 take Exit 16 at Haugan, Montana. At the stop sign head north to the frontage road. At the frontage road turn right and take the first left, crossing the cattle guard. Signs are onsite to follow.
