About
Savenac East Cottage is one of several historic rental cabins at the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery, located in the Lolo National Forest near Haugan, Montana. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938, the cottage offers comfortable accommodations for up to four people in two bedrooms featuring one queen bed and two twin beds. The facility includes electricity, potable running water, a modern bathroom, and a kitchen equipped with a stove, microwave, refrigerator, and cooking utensils. The Savenac Tree Nursery was founded in 1907 as the Forest Service's largest and most productive nursery in the West, with operations concluding in 1969. The site now serves as a recreational area with interpretive trails, historic memorials, and a visitor center open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Savenac Creek runs through the compound, providing a scenic backdrop. Recreational opportunities abound in the surrounding area. The Route of the Hiawatha Trail, a world-class mountain biking destination, is 14 miles west at Taft Exit 5. The St. Regis River and nearby streams offer fishing and wading. In winter, groomed snowmobile trails and cross-country skiing are accessible, with Lookout Pass ski area just 16 miles west on I-90.
