About

The Savenac Cookhouse is one of four rental cabins at the Historic Savenac Tree Nursery, a former U.S. Forest Service nursery founded in 1907 that operated until 1969. Located 90 miles west of Missoula off Interstate 90 near Haugan, the cookhouse provides group cooking and dining accommodations with a commercial-grade kitchen featuring a range with grill and double ovens, commercial dishwasher, walk-in refrigerator/freezer, two standard refrigerators, microwave, and utensils for 25-30 guests. The facility seats up to 30 for dining and sleeps 9 on twin beds with mattress covers in the basement area. Three bathrooms with two showers provide flush toilet facilities and potable water is available. Smoking is prohibited indoors and pets must remain leashed in the compound but are not allowed inside the building. A food storage order is in effect for bear conflict prevention. The surrounding Savenac compound includes a visitor center operating Memorial Day through Labor Day, interpretive trails, and historic memorials. The Route of the Hiawatha mountain biking trail is 7 miles west, and Lookout Pass ski area is 10 miles away. Savenac Creek runs through the property, and nearby opportunities include fishing on the St. Regis River and winter activities on groomed snowmobile trails.

Directions

From Missoula, travel west on Interstate 90 for 90 miles to Haugan (Exit 16). Turn right at the stop sign. At the frontage road turn right, then take the first left, crossing the cattleguard. The compound is well signed and entrance is visible from the exit.
