About
The Savenac Cookhouse provides unique group accommodations at the Historic Savenac Tree Nursery in the Lolo National Forest of western Montana. Originally built as a residence and converted in the 1970s, the cookhouse now serves as a rental facility for groups visiting this former Forest Service nursery that operated from 1907 to 1969. The facility features a fully equipped commercial kitchen with double ovens, grills, burners, a commercial dishwasher, walk-in refrigerator/freezer, and cooking equipment for 25-30 people. The dining area seats up to 30 guests. Downstairs, 9 twin beds with mattresses are available in sleeping quarters, along with two bathrooms equipped with showers. Guests must bring their own bedding, towels, and food supplies. The nursery compound includes interpretive trails, historic memorials including a living memorial of 78 spruce trees, and Savenac Creek running through the property. The world-class Route of the Hiawatha Trail is 7 miles west, offering mountain biking opportunities. Nearby fishing, the St. Regis River, and Lookout Pass ski area 10 miles west provide additional recreation. Winter visitors enjoy groomed snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The visitor center operates Memorial Day through Labor Day, and a family restaurant, gas station, and general store are within walking distance.
Directions
From Missoula, travel west on Interstate 90 for 90 miles to Haugan (Exit 16). Turn right at the stop sign. At the frontage road turn right, then take the first left, crossing the cattleguard. The compound is well signed and the entrance is visible.
