About
Nizhoni Campground is nestled at the foot of the Abajo Mountains in southeast Utah's Manti-La Sal National Forest at an elevation of 7,800 feet. The campground is forested with towering ponderosa pines that provide partial shade, interspersed with gambel oaks and sagebrush across the landscape. Summer temperatures typically range from 80-90 degrees during the day and 55-65 degrees at night, creating comfortable conditions for camping. The campground features 21 single-family sites accessed by gravel roads and parking spurs, well-spaced for privacy. Two group sites can each accommodate up to 50 campers. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings, with vault toilets and hand-pump drinking water available seasonally. Firewood may be collected in and around the campground. Recreation opportunities are abundant, with several hiking trailheads nearby including Shay Ridge, Aspen Flat, and Red Ledges. The area is popular for wildlife viewing, with mule deer, wild turkeys, Abert's squirrels, and occasional black bears present. Off-road vehicle riding and mountain biking are also popular activities. The scenic Abajo Loop State Scenic Backway passes the campground, leading from desert floor and red rock canyons to steep mountains over 11,000 feet high with spectacular overlooks and panoramic views. Nearby attractions include Canyonlands, Arches, and Mesa Verde National Parks, Dark Canyon Wilderness, and Lake Powell.
Directions
From Blanding, travel north on Highway 191 approximately 2 miles. Turn left on E. Pinion Ridge Road (County Road 2191) at the National Forest Access sign for Dry Wash Reservoir and proceed 3/4 mile to the stop sign. Turn right on Forest Road 079 and continue approximately 10 miles to the campground on the right side of the road.
