About
Hopkins Mountain Fireman's Cabin sits at 3,162 feet elevation in the Monongahela National Forest, approximately 17 miles north of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, the cabin has been virtually unaltered since construction and offers a unique glimpse into Forest Service history. The property also features a logging tramway used from 1908 to the 1920s and a Civil War Trail used in 1863 during the retreat of the 64th Virginia Battalion after the Battle of Droop Mountain. The 14x20 ft cabin sleeps 4 people on two twin single beds configured as bunks and one full/double bed, all with mattresses. A tent pad on the property can accommodate an additional 8 guests, bringing maximum occupancy to 12. The cabin is equipped with electricity, heat, and a refrigerator. A vault toilet, fire ring, and two picnic tables are located outside. Guests must bring their own water, food, bedding, towels, and toiletries. Potable water is available at nearby Blue Bend Recreation Area from May through October. The cabin is accessed via Forest Road 139 (Hopkins Mountain Road), a single-lane, steep road. While passable by passenger vehicle in good conditions, 4WD is recommended as conditions can change quickly during adverse weather. Snow and ice are possible on the access road in spring and fall. Walk-in use is not allowed; reservations must be made through Recreation.gov prior to arrival.
Directions
From White Sulphur Springs, travel north on State Highway 92 for approximately 9 miles. Turn left (west) onto State Route 16 and travel approximately 4 miles. Across from the entrance to Blue Bend Recreation Area, turn onto Forest Road 139 (Hopkins Mountain Road) and travel approximately 4 miles to the circular turnaround and the cabin. The road is single-lane and steep; 4WD recommended.
