About

Cales Knoll Campground forms one of four camping loops at Lake Sherwood Recreation Area, nestled along the shores of the largest lake in Monongahela National Forest. At an elevation of 2,600 feet, the 156-acre Lake Sherwood provides a complete family destination with diverse recreation opportunities. The Cales Knoll Loop offers the most affordable camping option within the recreation area at $16 per night during peak season. Each campsite includes a parking spur, tent pad, picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. During the summer season, campers have access to restrooms with running water, flush toilets, hot showers, and electricity. In spring and fall, vault toilets and a hand pump well remain available after water systems shut down. The campground features gravel parking aprons up to 20 feet wide, and a dump station serves the entire recreation area, though individual sites lack hookups. Lake Sherwood offers exceptional fishing for tiger muskie, channel catfish, bullhead, bluegill, and largemouth bass. Boating is popular with three boat launches and rentals available, though only electric motors are permitted. Two sand beaches connected by a scenic footbridge provide swimming access with bathhouses. Hiking opportunities range from the popular 3.5-mile Lake Sherwood Trail Loop to more challenging backcountry routes. Wildlife including black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bobcat, and river otter inhabit the surrounding forest.
