About

Hole-in-the-Ground Campground is tucked away in a steep, tree-covered draw alongside Mill Creek in the Almanor Ranger District of Lassen National Forest. True to its name, this secluded campground sits in a valley bottom surrounded by shady pines, offering a genuine backcountry feel while remaining accessible by vehicle. The campground features 13 designated sites, each accommodating up to 8 people and one vehicle. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and metal campfire ring. Drinking water is available from a hand pump, and vault toilets serve the campground. Due to the steep terrain and narrow access road, only shorter travel trailers are recommended. The campground is accessed via Forest Road 28N06, which includes approximately 3 miles of dirt road. The location provides excellent access to Mill Creek for fishing and serves as a gateway to the Ishi Wilderness. The campground operates seasonally, typically from May through September, though opening dates may vary based on snowpack and weather conditions. Sites are first-come, first-served at $12 per night, with fees payable upon arrival. Federal Interagency Senior and Access passes receive a 50% discount.
