Southwest Walk-in Campground
Open — Open year-round. The campground operates with two seasonal configurations: during snow-free months the walk-in tent area is on the east side of the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center parking area, and when snow is present (approximately November through May) the tent camping area moves to an over-the-snow location south of the parking lot. Self-contained vehicle camping in the parking lot is available year-round.

About
Southwest Walk-in Campground serves as Lassen Volcanic National Park's year-round camping option, situated at 6,700 feet elevation just one mile from the Southwest Entrance and adjacent to the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center parking area. The campground's configuration changes seasonally to accommodate snow conditions, with regulations and camping areas shifting approximately November through May. During the summer and fall seasons, the campground offers 20 walk-in tent sites accessed via a short, paved walkway on the east side of the visitor center parking area, plus 15 parking lot sites for self-contained vehicles (RVs, trailers, or camper vans up to 36 feet). Each walk-in tent site accommodates up to 2 tents, 6 people, and 2 vehicles. When snow covers the ground in winter and spring, the tent camping area relocates to an over-the-snow area south of the parking lot, with registration at the fee booth south of the parking area. Self-contained vehicles may camp in the parking lot year-round by parking between the parking lot medians. The campground operates entirely first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Payment is made through Recreation.gov's Scan & Pay mobile app at the campground information board. Summer and fall temperatures range from highs of 65-81°F to lows of 26-36°F, while winter and spring see highs of 50-61°F and lows of 13-23°F. The area is usually snow-free by late June. Year-round flush toilets and potable water are available at the adjacent visitor center facilities. Some park facilities and areas remain closed due to lasting effects from the 2021 Dixie Fire.
