About

Chittenango Falls State Park is centered around its dramatic 167-foot waterfall, formed 10,000 years ago through glacial sculpting of 400 million-year-old bedrock. Visitors can view the falls from multiple vantage points, including from the top, along a winding gorge trail that descends to a footbridge at the base, and from observation areas on the opposite side. The park's diverse plant and wildlife communities thrive along the trails and gorge. While many older camping guides still list Chittenango Falls as a campground, camping facilities were permanently closed in the mid-2000s due to budget constraints. The park now operates exclusively as a day-use facility. Activities include hiking on trails through the gorge and surrounding woodlands, fishing for brown trout in Chittenango Creek, and picnicking at tables and two rentable pavilions that accommodate 25 to 100 people. Additional amenities include a playground and restroom facilities. The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, though some facilities operate seasonally. The Gorge Trail closes for winter, typically from early November through spring. Vehicle entry fees are collected via automated pay station from late May through Labor Day. Two pets on leashes up to six feet are permitted in day-use areas.
