About
Stoney Pond State Forest Camping Area is located in the highlands between Morrisville and Cazenovia in Madison County, offering 17 designated primitive campsites on 1,469 acres of state forest land. Most sites are situated among white pine plantations at the south end of the 44-acre Stoney Pond, while two sites (16 and 17) are hike-in only, accessible via trail #2 for a more secluded experience. Each campsite includes a fire ring or pit. The pond was constructed in the late 1950s to provide wildlife habitat and is now stocked with largemouth bass and panfish. Non-motorized boating is permitted via a hand launch site, making it ideal for kayaks and canoes. Wildlife viewing opportunities include Canada geese, mallard ducks, waterfowl, and blue herons. The forest features a mix of red pine, white pine, scotch pine, and Norway spruce plantations alongside natural hardwoods. During winter months, the property offers 13 miles of groomed Nordic ski trails winding through forests and around the pond, designed primarily for beginner and intermediate skiers. The trails are also open to equestrians from May 1 to October 31. Primitive dispersed camping is allowed year-round elsewhere in the forest, at least 150 feet from roads, trails, or water.
