Overview

Sequoia National Park is open year-round, 24/7, though accessibility varies dramatically by season and elevation. The park protects 404,064 acres in the southern Sierra Nevada of California and is managed jointly with Kings Canyon National Park. The park is home to the world's largest trees (giant sequoias) and Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous U.S. at 14,505 feet. Winter conditions currently require tire chains/cables by California law in chain control zones—this includes all-wheel and 4WD vehicles. A significant winter storm hit the parks December 24-26, 2024, bringing 3-5 feet of snow and causing temporary road closures, particularly on Generals Highway between Wuksachi and Grant Grove. Crystal Cave reopened for the 2025 season (May 23-September 7) after a 4-year closure due to wildfire and flood damage—tickets must be purchased online in advance as they sell out quickly. Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon closes seasonally (typically late October through late May). The free Sequoia Shuttle operates during peak periods. Check road conditions 24/7 at (559) 565-3341. Arrive early on weekends as parking lots fill quickly, especially with snow accumulation. Rangers programs were reduced in March 2025 due to staffing. Bears remain active even in winter in the foothills.
