South Fork Campground

Closed — Closed indefinitely due to extensive flood and landslide damage from winter 2022-2023. The campground will not be rebuilt. The area is being converted to trailhead parking as part of road repairs that began October 2025.

About

South Fork Campground was a small, primitive campground situated in a remote area of the foothills on the South Fork of the Kaweah River in Sequoia National Park, away from main park highways and features. Located at 3,600 feet elevation, the campground provided 10 first-come, first-served sites accessed via a dirt road that continued to the Ladybug Trailhead. The campground and its access road were heavily and extensively damaged by floods and landslides during a series of atmospheric rivers in the winter of 2022-2023. The debris flow decimated the campground infrastructure and rendered the dirt road impassible. The National Park Service has no current plans to rehabilitate the campground due to the uncertainty of geohazards in the area and lack of funding. Road repairs began in October 2025 and are expected to take six to nine months. However, rather than rebuilding the campground, the NPS is converting the old campground area into a visitor parking area and trailhead access point for the Garfield and Ladybug trails. The existing vault toilet will be retained for visitor use. This primitive area previously offered no potable water and did not permit trailers or RVs due to the rough dirt access road.

Directions

Take Highway 198 to the town of Three Rivers. Five miles before the main Sequoia park entrance, turn onto South Fork Road and travel east for 12.3 miles. The paved road ends shortly before the former campground location. The dirt portion of the road is currently impassible due to flood damage.
