Atwell Mill Campground is a remote, high-elevation camping destination located 19 miles from Highway 198 on Mineral King Road in Sequoia National Park. Situated at 6,650 feet along the East Fork of the Kaweah River, the campground offers 21 tent-only sites, all available by reservation only. The access road is primarily unpaved, narrow, winding, and deeply rutted in places, making it unsuitable for RVs and trailers, which are strictly prohibited in the campground. The Mineral King area provides access to exceptional backcountry hiking, with trails leading to alpine lakes and mountain passes beginning nearby. Black bears are active in the area, and all sites are equipped with metal food storage lockers. Limited services are available at Silver City Resort, 1.7 miles east, while more extensive services can be found in Three Rivers, approximately 1.5 hours west of the campground. The campground operates seasonally during summer months, typically from late May through October, when weather conditions permit access. Summers are usually warm and sunny, though visitors should be prepared for three-season camping conditions as weather can change rapidly at this elevation. Fire restrictions may be in effect during dry conditions.

Directions

From Highway 198 in Three Rivers, turn onto Mineral King Road. Travel 19 miles on the narrow, winding, largely unpaved road to reach the campground, located 6 miles before the end of Mineral King Road. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours from Three Rivers. RVs and trailers are not permitted due to road conditions.
