About

Woods Canyon Lake Group Campground is a dedicated group site in the Rim Lakes Recreation Area of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, positioned at 7,600 feet elevation in north-central Arizona. The campground sits within a thick mixed forest of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, oak, and aspen, just a short walk from the 52-acre Woods Canyon Lake. The single large site accommodates up to 100 people and 30 vehicles on a gravel pull-through driveway, making it ideal for family reunions, scout troops, and organizational gatherings. The site includes fire rings, picnic tables, a vault toilet, and potable water. Woods Canyon Lake allows only electric trolling motors and provides quality trout fishing in both the lake and nearby streams. The Rim Lakes Vista Trail begins less than a mile from the campground and offers expansive views of the Mogollon Rim. An easy interpretive trail loops around the lake, and free interpretive nature programs are available to groups by advance arrangement. Summer temperatures at this elevation are pleasant, though afternoon thunderstorms are common from late June through August. Wildlife in the area includes deer, elk, squirrels, and occasional bears. The nearest full-service community is Payson, 35 miles west on Highway 260.

Directions

From Payson, Arizona, take Highway 260 northeast toward Heber. Turn left (west) onto Forest Road 300 and follow for 3 miles. Turn right at Woods Canyon Lake Road and travel 0.75 miles to the campground on the right.
