About
Windsor State Forest spans 1,825 acres in the rolling hills of the northern Berkshires in western Massachusetts. Created in 1924 from former farmland and cut-over forests, the state forest was developed during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built much of the infrastructure that remains today. The forest is noted for the Windsor Jambs, where Windsor Jambs Brook cascades through a 25-foot-wide gorge flanked by 80-foot-high granite walls. The campground features 24 limited-service campsites located along the Westfield River. A day-use area offers a 100-foot sandy beach for swimming, picnic facilities including an accessible pavilion accommodating 50 people, charcoal grills, and a dish washing station. Ten miles of trails and dirt roads meander through the forest, enjoyed by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. In winter, the trails attract snowshoers, cross-country skiers, and snowmobilers. The state forest adjoins The Trustees' 3,000-acre Notchview Reservation to the west, renowned for Nordic skiing, creating an expansive conservation area. Other popular activities include picnicking, hunting, fishing, and nature study. The mix of fields and forested areas makes this a popular spot for birding, with views of nearby Mount Greylock visible from open fields.
