About

Mohawk Trail State Forest is one of Massachusetts' most scenic woodland areas, encompassing 6,000 acres of mountain ridges, deep gorges, and old-growth forest in the northern Berkshires. The campground offers 46 drive-in tent sites, 6 walk-in car-free sites, a group site, and 6 Civilian Conservation Corps-era log cabins with wood stoves and electricity but no running water. All sites include a picnic table, fire ring with grate, and bear box. The campground completed a $1.4 million renovation that installed a new water system, repaved all campground roads, replaced cabin and building roofs, upgraded bathroom facilities, and restored the historic CCC-era cabin chimneys. The modern accessible bathhouse features flush toilets and hot showers. The forest offers excellent hiking on trails including the Mahican-Mohawk Trail, fishing in the Cold River and Deerfield River, and access to some of the tallest trees in New England in the Elder Grove. Reservations are required and can be made up to 4 months in advance through ReserveAmerica. The campground operates mid-May through mid-October, with winter cabin camping available separately.
