About

Mohawk Trail State Forest spans over 6,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the heart of western Massachusetts, offering one of the most scenic camping experiences in the state. A clear, cold river cascades through the forest along a rocky streambed, providing exceptional trout fishing opportunities across more than 18 miles of rivers and streams, including the Deerfield River and Cold River. The campground features 46 drive-in campsites, 6 walk-in car-free sites situated down a short hill near the river, 1 group campsite, and 6 rustic overnight log cabins that accommodate 3-5 people. The car-free sites offer a more secluded experience with easy river access. The forest's diverse landscape of mountain ridges, deep gorges, and towering old-growth trees supports abundant wildlife including deer, black bears, and bobcats. Visitors can enjoy river swimming in designated areas, explore miles of hiking trails through varied terrain, and experience cross-country skiing or snowshoeing during winter months when the forest transforms into a snow-covered wonderland. The campground underwent a $1.4 million renovation in 2024, including repaved roads, cabin upgrades, new roofs, bathroom improvements, and a new water system.
