About

Seth Warner Shelter serves as the gateway to Vermont's Long Trail for northbound hikers and marks the beginning of the shared Appalachian Trail/Long Trail corridor. This primitive three-sided shelter sits within the Green Mountain National Forest's Manchester District, accessible via a short 0.2-mile spur trail off the main footpath. The shelter accommodates 6-7 hikers and includes nearby tent platforms for overflow camping. The current shelter was completed in early 2023 after the original structure was deconstructed in August 2022. Volunteers precut the frame as a kit, which was airlifted to the site by helicopter before the Long Trail Patrol completed final construction. The new location sits approximately two miles north of the former site, positioned farther from road access to minimize unwanted use. As with all Long Trail shelters, Seth Warner operates first-come, first-served with no reservations accepted. There are no fees to stay, though donations to the Green Mountain Club support ongoing maintenance. Hikers should bring their own shelter as a backup during peak season when the shelter may be full. A composting privy is available, and water can be obtained from nearby sources but must be filtered, boiled, or chemically treated before drinking.
