About

Seth Warner Shelter is a backcountry overnight shelter located on the coincident Appalachian National Scenic Trail and Long Trail in southern Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. The shelter was completely rebuilt and relocated in 2023, moving approximately two miles north of its original site. The new shelter is situated about 5.45 miles north of the Vermont-Massachusetts border and 5.4 miles south of Congdon Shelter, accessible via a short spur trail to the west. The shelter features modern post and beam construction and is maintained by the Green Mountain Club. A composting privy is located on-site, and the water source is positioned north of the shelter along the Long Trail. Hikers must treat or filter water from nearby natural sources. No overflow tenting sites are designated at the shelter, though dispersed camping is permitted in the area following Green Mountain National Forest and Leave No Trace principles. Due to Green Mountain National Forest regulations, proper food storage is required. The shelter does not currently have a bear box, so hikers must use a bear canister or practice proper bear hanging techniques. The site is free of charge and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Seth Warner Shelter serves as an important stop for long-distance hikers traversing Vermont's mountain wilderness.
