About
October Mountain State Forest is the largest state forest in Massachusetts at 16,460 acres, offering a scenic campground with 44 campsites and three yurts arranged in a three-tiered hillside layout. The campground provides a base for exploring the extensive forest, which features challenging OHV trails for intermediate to expert riders, numerous hiking opportunities including access to the Appalachian Trail, and diverse woodland recreation. The campground is situated on the eastern edge of the state forest, less than five miles from the towns of Lenox and Lee. While the forest is vast, the campground itself is relatively compact with limited privacy between sites. Approximately eight sites are suitable for RVs, making early reservations advisable during peak season. The campground offers basic amenities including hot showers, bear boxes, fire pits, and picnic tables at individual sites. Visitors to October Mountain can enjoy the natural beauty of the Berkshires while maintaining proximity to cultural attractions such as Tanglewood and other points of interest in the Central Berkshire region. The forest's size and trail network provide extensive opportunities for day hiking, backcountry exploration, and off-highway vehicle recreation on designated trails.
